Background: Sawyer is a former teacher who served on the Bolton Board of Education for 12 years. She opposed a bill that would have restricted the sale of junk food in schools. In 2009, she was one of nine House Republicans to vote for legislation codifying in state law the court decision legalizing same-sex marriage.
