For the sixth time in the history of the NCAA basketball tournament, UConn’s women’s and men’s teams have both secured spots in the Final Four.
That’s saying something.
Because while other schools have had both their men’s and women’s teams appear in the Final Four in the same year, none has done it more than once, let alone six times. And UConn is the only school to have taken both the men and women’s national titles in the same year. They’ve done that twice, in 2004 and 2014.
And in the other four times they’ve both appeared in the Final Four, one of the teams has been crowned national champion.
The women’s team has won 12 titles, and the men’s team has won six.
Overall, this has only happened 16 times in NCAA history — where both teams from the same school have made it to the Final Four in the same year. However, UConn’s record accounts for nearly 40% of the 16 times.
In 1983, Georgia was the first school to have both teams appear in the Final Four game in the same year. And aside from UConn, Syracuse University is the only other school in the Northeastern United States to have both teams play in the Final Four in one year.
The women’s team secured their spot this year after beating Notre Dame by 18 points. The men’s team took the nail-biting route when a buzzer-beating three-pointer put the team one point above Duke, the top seed, last weekend.
As for buzzer-beating stats, Braylon Mullin’s winning shot was the 24th 3-point buzzer-beater in NCAA March Madness history, and the first 3-point buzzer-beater in UConn’s March Madness history. But historically, buzzer beaters have not created a significant amount of mathematical momentum for teams.
The women will play for the finals Friday, and the men Saturday.
