If at first you don’t succeed…

A Republican source says Dan Debicella of Shelton plans to challenge Rep. Jim Himes, D-4th District, in next year’s election.

Debicella, a Republican who ran unsuccessfully against Himes in 2010, will formally declare his candidacy soon, the source said.

In their previous contest, Himes won 53 percent of the vote against Debicella, a businessman who served two terms in the state Senate. He is currently employed at Bridgewater Associates.

In that earlier campaign, Debicella raised about $1.9 million while Himes raised more than $3.3 million.

In that race, Debicella attacked Himes’ claims of moderation and independence from the House Democratic leadership. Himes, in turn, portrayed Decibella as a GOP extremist who criticized the stimulus bill but welcomed money from that bill for his Senate district.
