Tanzania M. Cooper, the campaign treasurer for state Rep. Douglas McCrory, D-Hartford, was arrested Friday and accused of stealing nearly $4,000 in campaign funds. Cooper told authorities McCrory had no knowledge of the theft.
Inspectors from the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney arrested her after an investigation requested by the State Elections Enforcement Commission, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. She was released on a non-cash bond to appear Nov. 1 in Hartford Superior Court.
An audit by the commission raised questions about 21 withdrawals Cooper made from McCrory’s campaign fund from July 2010 to July 2012. Cooper was unable to provide a legitimate reason for the withdrawals, according to the affidavit.
