Rep. Jeff Currey, D-East Harford, notified the secretary of the state’s office Thursday he is relinquishing the Democratic nomination as of July 30 and will not seek reelection to a sixth term this fall.
Currey, who received a kidney transplant four years ago, said his health is fine and that he will leave the General Assembly at the end of his term for “professional opportunities” that he cannot yet disclose.

Once his term ends in January, there will be no Currey holding elective office in East Hartford for the first time since 1982. His late mother, Melody, was a state representative and mayor. His father, the current chair of the Metropolitan District Commission, was East Hartford’s elected treasurer.
“It’s the end of an era,” Currey said.
Currey is the co-chair of the legislature’s Education Committee. His 11th House District is a safe Democratic seat, covering portions of East Hartford and Manchester.
The party will be free to nominate a new candidate.
