Is it negative to note that your opponent won’t pledge to stay positive?

Oh, these things get tricky.

As we reported yesterday, House Speaker Chris Donovan urged the Democratic field in the 5th Congressional District to swear off negative ads. Elizabeth Esty demurred.

Today, Donovan sent out a fundraising appeal, noting Esty’s refusal (without naming her) and saying he needs to bulk up for her expected attack.

Esty’s campaign sent the appeal to reporters with this note: ICYMI, Donovan breaks “No Negative Attacks Pledge” before even signing it.
