A White House official announced Tuesday how President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will observe the one-year anniversary of the Newtown shootings.

“On  Saturday, December 14, the President and First Lady will honor the lives and legacies of the children and educators lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School one year ago by observing a moment of silence,” the official said.

The president is expected to miss a vigil for Newtown’s victims at the National Cathedral Thursday because he traveled to South Africa to attend a memorial for former South African President Nelson Mandela, who died last week.
