Donald E. Williams Jr., the former Senate president pro tem and current executive director of the Connecticut Education Association, was hospitalized over the weekend after a serious car accident, the union announced Tuesday.

“Our entire staff is extremely optimistic about Don’s prognosis, and we look forward to his return after he has had time to rest and rehabilitate,” said Jeff Leake, the union’s president. “I urge our members and all the people of Connecticut to join the education community in wishing him a smooth recovery and a swift return to the work he loves—advocating for students, teachers, and public education.”

Williams, 61, left the legislature in January 2015 after 21 years in office. He joined the CEA staff in 2015 and became executive director in 2017.
