A 22-year veteran of the state House of Representatives, Griswold Democrat Steve Mikutel, announced Tuesday he would not seek re-election.

“Now it’s time for me to move on and give someone else the opportunity to serve,” Mikutel wrote in a statement to the media.

A moderate member of the House Democratic Caucus, Mikutel wrote that he regrets how government “has become increasingly dysfunctional, primarily due to the partisan polarization of our politics.

“I believed in bipartisanship and always urged Republicans and Democrats to find common ground.”

Mikutel represents the 45th Assembly District, which includes Griswold, Sterling, Voluntown and portions of Lisbon and Plainfield.

Vice chairman of the Transportation Committee, Mikutel also serves on the Commerce and Public Safety committees.
