Frigid spell diverts natural gas from New England’s power grid

For the second time since Friday, frigid temperatures in New England are forcing a realignment of how natural gas is used to power the region -– a renewed reminder that increasing reliance on natural gas, coupled with limited pipeline capacity to deliver it, has ramifications for the reliability of the electric grid and, potentially, the cost to consumers.

Harp resigns from Senate, starting countdown to special election

Toni Harp, the newly inaugurated Democratic mayor of New Haven, resigned Tuesday from the state Senate, forcing a special election to choose a successor within the next 56 days. By law, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has 10 days to issue a writ of special election. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill must then schedule an election within 46 days of Malloy’s action.

Revamp the property tax system to overcome unfairness, inefficiency

This should be the year state policymakers start to revamp the state’s property tax structure. We know that the system is unfair, and there is a clear path forward to fix it. Current property taxes are unfair in a number of ways. Owners of properties with the same fair market value pay vastly different property taxes based on which town they are in. Owners also pay very different taxes for the same level of local public services. Residents often receive very different levels of local public services for the same level of taxes paid.
