Connecticut has made remarkable strides in improving its array of services and evidence-based programs to ensure more kids can grow and thrive in families. Commissioner Joette Katz has not rejected group placement as an option; she has merely required the justification that taking kids away from families demands.

New caseworkers expected to ease load on overworked DCF staff

Caseworkers for the Department of Children and Families have unreasonably high workloads and are looking for relief, which may come from the 81 new staff members stepping into their ranks, the department’s court-appointed overseer says.

Report: DCF must do better at tracking kids who ‘age out’

The Connecticut Department of Children and Families needs to do a better job of tracking children who age out of its care. Until that happens, a state report says, it is hard to gauge the effectiveness of its programs for seeing children into a productive adulthood.

DCF finds placement for jailed transgender teen

The state Department of Children and Families said Thursday that “Jane Doe,” the 16-year-old transgender girl whose incarceration has become a national civil-rights issue, has been tentatively placed in a secure residential treatment facility in Massachusetts.

The Basics: A bill to get names removed from CT’s child abuse registry

With more than 90,000 people listed on the state’s child abuse and neglect registry for allegations made against them at least 14 years ago, the state may finally ease the process for people to get their name removed.
