Last call: Tickets for Mirror’s Pairings event at Two Roads Tuesday

Online ticket sales will continue only through today for the second event in The Mirror’s four-part Policy Pairings Series, which will take place at Two Roads Brewing Company in Stratford on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. The discussion will focus on the long-term future of road transportation in Connecticut. The panel will be moderated by Mirror Capitol Bureau Chief Mark Pazniokas. Each ticket entitles you to an open sampling of Two Roads beers and assorted pub fare will also be served.

Lembo: Time to fix worsening state budget deficit is now

State Comptroller Kevin P. Lembo agreed Wednesday with nonpartisan analysts that the budget deficit is worse than Gov. Dannel P. Malloy administration is projecting. But while Lembo also urged the governor and legislature “proceed without delay” to reduce the shortfall, his $172.8 million deficit forecast falls just short of the level that would compel the governor to prepare a deficit-mitigation plan.

Connecticut’s budget debate boiled over late Tuesday as the legislature’s top Republicans charged that Comptroller Kevin P. Lembo’s political affiliation has trumped his fiscal integrity. Sen. Len Fasano and Rep. Themis Klarides accused Connecticut’s chief fiscal watchdog of ignoring red ink to help Gov. Dannel P. Malloy – a fellow Democrat – save face.

Malloy takes oath for second term: ‘I most assuredly do’

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s second term as Connecticut’s 88th governor began Wednesday at 2:15 p.m. as Andrew McDonald, the state Supreme Court’s first gay justice and the governor’s former legal adviser, administered the oath of office in the cavernous drill shed of the State Armory. Asked if he would swear to uphold the duties of the office, Malloy raised his right hand and replied, “I most assuredly do.”

Comptroller candidates want to bolster transparency, fiscal security

The candidates vying to become Connecticut’s chief fiscal guardian agree more must be done to improve state government’s transparency and fiscal security. But while incumbent Kevin Lembo says the state has made considerable progress on both fronts over the past four years, his Republican challenger, Sharon McLaughlin, insists too much work remains to be done to feel good about the status quo.
