East Haven Police Chief Leonard Gallo is set to step down today amidst a continuing FBI investigation into alleged discrimination against Latinos.

Four East Haven police officers were arrested and charged last week — accused of systematic harassment of the Latino population in East Haven, including illegal searches and the use of excessive force.

Gallo had been placed on leave during the federal probe by former East Haven Mayor April Capone — but was reinstated when Mayor Joseph Maturo took office this fall. Maturo’s now infamous “Taco Comments” have made national news, drawing even more attention to the city.

Gallo was scheduled to make his announcement at a news conference at 11 a.m. Monday.
