Dannel P. Malloy
Malloy’s ‘racist in outcome’ phrase expresses an historic truth
We should take Gov. Malloy’s use of the phrase “racist in outcome if not intent” — and the Republicans’ disproportionate show of hurt feelings — as an opportunity for an unflinching examination of how our state’s system of town governments perpetuates the legal segregation of an earlier era. Historical factors and policies, many of them explicitly racist, have made Connecticut’s large cities predominantly non-white and predominantly poor, while its suburbs are predominantly white and better off.
Of politics, doing the right thing, and Connecticut jellyfish
This week’s debate over Gov. Dannel Malloy’s plan to reform an outdated drug law with clear racial implications shines a spotlight on discouraging dysfunction within the Connecticut General Assembly. What is surprising, and a bit embarrassing, is the ease with which our legislators apparently can be intimidated from doing the right thing — and their willingness to admit it.
Time is short, but budget talks are going long
With just two weeks left in the 2015 General Assembly session, the principals in final state budget negotiations acknowledged Wednesday that little progress has been made as the June 3 deadline looms large.
Legislators advance in-state tuition, financial aid for undocumented students
The state House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to expand the number of undocumented immigrants who qualify for much lower in-state tuition rates at Connecticut public colleges. Meanwhile, another bill that would make these students eligible to compete for a $140 million pool of financial aid was approved by the state Senate.
Gov. Malloy’s ‘Smart Start’ picks winners … but we all lose
The Connecticut Office of Early Childhood and the Gov. Dannel Malloy recently announced the first round of winners in the Smart Start initiative. And while they acknowledged that many school districts opted not to apply, they fail to acknowledge the glaring truth about the reason, i.e. this is a bad initiative and a bad prescription for […]
A ‘kumbaya moment’ eludes Connecticut pols
Lost in the imbroglio over whether Gov. Dannel P. Malloy really blames racism for GOP opposition to his sentencing reforms was that the legislation already had stalled in the General Assembly for a more conventional reason: Democrats see the issue as politically dangerous.
FAQ part of Malloy’s lobbying for ‘Second Chance’
The office of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy sent the following email to legislators. SB 952, An Act Concerning a Second Chance Society Frequently Asked Questions As Governor’s Bill 952 has moved through the legislative process, there have been numerous questions (as well as some misconceptions) about various aspects of the bill. House GOP walks out, says Malloy called them racist

Malloy intern application form out of step with 2nd-chance goal
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy continued a statewide tour these past two weeks to promote a series of proposed “Second Chance Society” reforms he had unveiled at Yale Law School in February. But it turns out that, at least in hiring interns, the Democratic governor’s administration is asking some job-seekers in the initial screening if they have criminal pasts, despite a law that bans the practice for most state jobs.
