The need for an equitable back-to-school strategy

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been felt most urgently on the community level, especially when it comes to our local public schools. The closure of public schools was necessary to protect the health of children and their families, but has very much changed their daily lives. On a wider scale, it has exacerbated existing problems in Connecticut’s education system, particularly in high poverty areas and communities of color.

Connecticut needs a quicker plan forward

Uncertain times are when open debate should most be encouraged. The response actions by the state for COVID-19, good and bad, have largely gone unquestioned publicly, and I feel strongly we as citizens need to feel we have more than one public voice, the state, in guiding where we go from here. In that spirit, the following comments are meant to be a single list of constructive, not contrarian, ideas. Many of the state’s actions have been positive, but some need improvement, and fast.
